What to Know about Timing Belts

Every automobile powered by an internal combustion engine must have a timing mechanism. While some vehicles use a timing chain, many are equipped with a timing belt. This belt is made of hard rubber and is designed to be durable. The belt has teeth that interlock to turn the camshaft. As it turns twice, it rotates the crankshaft once. This drives the timing of the opening of the intake valves. These facilitate the entry of fuel and air into the cylinders, which are then closed for compression by the pistons and combustion. As the pistons move back, the exhaust valves open to release gases. As the name of the belt suggests, the timing of this process is critical. Its precision allows for flawless combustion, but a small miscue can be disastrous. At best, your engine will operate poorly if the timing is off. In worse cases, your engine can quickly sustain significant damage or experience catastrophic failure. While chains are more durable, belts are less expensive to produce, purchase, and replace. The timing belt on older model cars may loosen over time, requiring repair. Newer vehicles, however, are equipped with belt tensioners to help prevent this problem. Still, the timing belt won’t last forever. The most common problem is the wearing or breaking the rubber teeth. If the belt isn’t changed promptly, it could break, leading to an immediate, costly problem. You can consult your owner’s manual for guidance on when to change the belt in the absence of any noticeable trouble. Generally, this is at the 60- to 90,000-mile mark. It’s best practice to replace both the timing belt and water pump simultaneously due to their relative positions and similar life spans. You can save labor costs by taking care of both tasks in a single shop visit.
